TOPIC
Student self-reflections in ePortfolios
What is the topic of your action research?
The topic of the current study is student self-reflection in electronic portfolios.

Purpose
Use online tools to support student self-reflection of their work in EPs
What is the purpose of your study?
The researcher will use platform-based online tools to promote and support students’ self-reflection of their graphic design and photography work as shown on their EPs.

Research Question
How can online portfolios support student self-reflection?
What is your fundamental research question?
The purpose of portfolios in the researchers’ classes has primarily been to collect, showcase and archive students’ work in graphic design and photography. However, the current study seeks to extend the value and purpose of EPs to support students’ self-reflection on their own work.

Type of Data
Mixed methods (both qualitative and quantitative data)
What is the most appropriate type of date to collect? Qualitative, quantitative both (mixed-methods) Why?
The researcher will use both qualitative and quantitative data in order to show objective statistical data, while also capturing anecdotal growth made by students in the creative fields of graphic design and photography.

Data Collection
What specific form of data will you collect - what types of measurement instruments will you use?
The researcher will use pre- and post-survey questions that capture statistical data yet also allow students to respond freely with their own personal responses. Collecting both qualitative and quantitative data will generate a more complete picture of the results.

Design
Correlational Research
What is your research design?
Students a part of the current study have kept electronic portfolios over the course of the semester but have not yet engaged in formal reflection questions as an assignment. The researcher will find connections and trends that show how online portfolios (and platform-based collaborative tools) support students’ self- reflection. The findings fall under correlational research rather than pure experiment because the students have not been engaging in self-reflection since the beginning of creating their EPs.

Focus
How EPs support student self-reflection in graphic design and photography middle school classes
What is the focus of your literature review?
The focus of the current study is to discover how student-created EPs may go beyond an archival collection of work to support students’ self-reflection on their own work in photography and graphic design middle school classes.

Audience
Other American or international middle school teachers in CTE or STEAM fields.
Other teachers (elective or core) may use the findings of this study for their own electronic portfolio usage with students.

implementation PLan
Organized into one semester of school year.
While the proposed timeline could apply to fall or spring, this plan specifically follows Spring 2021 according to the Austin Independent School District calendar. Note that action steps are categorized by Implementation and Data Collection/Analysis, which are iterative and repeat multiple times in multiple ways throughout the semester.
Work to be completed prior to action research project:
Develop the Action Plan – Organize outline with action steps & timeframes attached. Draft all pre- and post- survey questions and organize into Google forms for student responses. Draft lesson plans for end of first term: What is self-reflection? Draft reflection sentence stems to be used each term and exemplar slides in student example portfolio.
